How to Convert Google Keep Notes to Obsidian

Google Keep is quick, free, and syncs everywhere, but it was never built for long-form notes or deep organization. Obsidian gives you local Markdown files plus a knowledge graph and plugins. Learn how to convert your Google Keep notes to Obsidian in a few simple steps below.

Export your Google Keep notes

  1. Go to Google Takeout: takeout.google.com. Sign in to your Google account if you aren't already signed in.

  2. Deselect all products: Google Takeout wants to export everything: Gmail, Drive, Photos, and more. Click Deselect all at the top-right corner to start fresh.

  3. Select Keep: Scroll down the list until you find Keep and check its checkbox. This tells Google to include only your Keep notes in the export.

  4. Configure your export settings: Scroll to the bottom and click Next step. On the following page, make sure Destination is set to Send download link via email, File type is set to .zip, and File size is set to 4 GB.

  5. Create the export: Click Create export. Google will begin packaging your Keep notes. This can take a while depending on how many notes you have.

  6. Download your notes: Once the export is ready, you'll receive a download link in your email. Click Download your files to get the .zip file. Google may ask you to sign in again for security.

Convert your notes

With your notes exported, the conversion itself takes seconds. We'll use our app Notes Convert, the only notes conversion tool on the market, that runs entirely on your device. You can download Notes Convert here. It's free for 50 notes, and inexpensive for unlimited notes.

  1. Import into Notes Convert: Open Notes Convert and set the import format to Google Keep. Click Open File and select the .zip file you downloaded from Google Takeout. Notes Convert reads the exported Keep data directly, preserving your titles, text, checkboxes, labels, and images.

  2. Choose Obsidian and convert: Pick Obsidian as the output format, click Convert, choose where to save your notes, and wait for the conversion.

Import into Obsidian

  1. Move the folder into place: Move the folder Notes Convert produced into where you want your notes stored — for example, Documents — and rename it if you like (for example, Obsidian Vault).

  2. Open the vault in Obsidian: Go to File → Open Vault…, click Open in the "Open folder as vault…" section, select the folder you moved, and click Open.

  3. Back in Obsidian: Your new notes appear in the file explorer immediately, links and all.

Done

Your Obsidian notes are ready to be used any way you want. Enjoy!
